Home Seasonal Camping

Most people that think of backcountry camping think of summer.  Killarney is actually open all year round and attracts many guests looking for the beauty of the park in the winter.  Most of the photos taken for this site are showing the park in the winter.  It should be noted that camping in the winter is much different than camping in the summer.  Yes you can still go hiking and sightseeing but its best if you have the aid of snowshoes.

Some other essentials are a winter tent (designed to keep in the heat) as well as lots of warm clothes.  Also since you won't be canoeing in seeing as how the lakes freeze over on the winter, you will need access to a sledge (a special sled for transporting you gear).  Since the lakes are frozen feel free to bring ice skates with you as the surfaces are very smooth.

One other option is to camp in a yurt.  Its a shelter designed to stay warm which comes with beds and storage space.  Its a great alternative to buying a winter tent, as they also have heaters in case you find it too cold.  Killarney just finished installing a few more so now they have a large abundance of yurts availible for rental.
