Home | Types of Backcountry Camping There are 3 main types of backcountry camping. I will discuss each in more detail below. Canoeing Canoeing means you are able to get further into the interior and thus further from civilization. Some like this isolation whereas some prefer to be closer to civilization. Either way, your going to need a waterfcraft. A canoe is your ideal choice as it can hold a lot more packs than a kayak and can transport multiple people. When canoeing in, odds are your going to have to make a few portages which means you will have to carry your canoe from one lake to another, meaning a lightweight canoe is a good choice. Hiking You can also choose to hike in though your range will be limited. There are a lot of trails that you can follow but bear in mind that everything you pack you have to carry the whole way. So pack light and wear very comfortable hiking boots if you plan to do it this way. Winter Winter camping is extremely different than the other more popular ways to backcountry camp. Because of how different it is, it has its own section at the end of the guide. Continue to Typical Practices |
